History
Apex Benefits Services provides benefit administration for self-funded employers as far north as Vermont and as far south as Florida with clients ranging in size from 80 – 55,000 members.
Since 1990, we have built a reputation for providing exceptional, custom healthcare benefit management products and solutions to self-funded employers and employees.
Apex Benefits Services’ roots trace back to Akron City Health System, a physician hospital organization (PHO) established in 1987 by 10 physicians and Akron City Hospital. Soon after, hundreds of physicians and several hospitals joined the PHO that contracted with major, self-funded employers. Among the first of these employers was The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, who remains a client today.
Over time, employees were so satisfied with the benefits and services they received that word spread throughout the community. In the early 1990s, the PHO established SummaCare, Inc. to begin selling fully-insured HMO products as a complement to self-funded products and to meet the needs of local employers. Over the next several years, SummaCare Inc. developed a series of Point of Service (POS) managed care products to meet the changing needs of its fully-insured clients. In 1995, Summa Insurance Company was formed so that Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) products could be developed and sold.
In 2001, Apex Benefits Services was created to further grow the administrative services business throughout Ohio and nationally. Today, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, Apex Benefits Services provides benefit administration for self-funded employers as far north as Vermont and as far south as Florida with clients ranging in size from 80 – 55,000 members.
Today, SummaCare, Inc. and Apex Benefits Services, both wholly-owned subsidiaries of Summa Insurance Company, provide services to meet the needs of all clients and employers, both fully-insured in Ohio and self-funded nationally.
